NOTE: The following is taken from summaries released by PEPFAR on the PEPFAR Data Dashboard. They are incomplete summary paragraphs only and do not contain the full mechanism details. When the full narratives are released, we will update the mechanism pages accordingly.

IMPACT: (A) Scale-up high quality HIV treatment and PMTCT through Malawi’s Christian hospitals (B) Support access to HIV services by training health workers. (C) Build capacity of the Christian Health Association of Malawi CHAM) Secretariat. (D) Provide bursary support for priority health worker cadres. CHAM is an ecumenical, non-profit umbrella organization for church-owned health facilities providing health care to 40% of all Malawians, most of which are located in rural hard-to-reach areas. CHAM also has 12 training colleges producing 77% of all new nurses in Malawi. Historically, CHAM's national response against HIV was limited by weak staffing and inadequate funding. PEPFAR supported provision of comprehensive integrated HIV services in four key hospitals in FY09 and was scaled up to a total of 20 sites in 15 districts as of FY13. Capacity is being built in the CHAM Secretariat to improve stakeholder coordination, prioritize HIV scale-up and improve service delivery monitoring. In COP 14 CHAM will maintain support in 20 sites, with a focus on improving linkage and retention across the HIV care cascade. PEPFAR support to CHAM includes bursary support for training front-line health workers for Malawi's health system and national HIV response. PEPFAR now supports 885 457 students to become nurses, clinicians, pharmacy and lab professionals through CHAM colleges. In FY14 CHAM will continue support to enrolled cohorts and increase intake of350 health professional students (mostly nurses), and support the upgrading of nursing and clinicians; pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants and laboratory technicians to reduce Malawi's large deficit in frontline health workers delivering HIV and essential health services in the public sector nationally

Mechanism Target Information

Since COP2014, PEPFAR no longer produces narratives for every mechanism it funds. However, PEPFAR has now included performance targets or indicator information for each mechanism based on the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting (MER) system. The MER guidance is available on PEPFAR's website https://www.pepfar.gov/reports/guidance/. Note that COP years 2014-2015 were under a previous version of the MER system and the indicators and definitions may have changed as of the new 2.0 guidance.
