The Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) is the oldest professional association in Ethiopia. One of EMA’s missions is to enable medical professionals to improve their professional practices through continuing education. They work with the government and other partners to improve the quality of health services. The objectives of this project are: To improve health professionals’ knowledge and skills to better provide healthcare/HIV/AIDS services; and build laboratory system strengthening.

Strategically, the partner will work in collaboration with USAID/JHPIEGO/HRH program to reduce duplication and leverage available resources. The partner will also work in collaboration with Mayo Clinic to create a country platform for the online HIV/AIDS Continuing Medical Education (CME) program based on county-led priorities. The geographic coverage will be national and the target populations are primarily health professionals working in the area of HIV/AIDS. The partner will develop an updated M&E system to track routine and periodic performance data on HIV/AIDS, CME , and laboratory system strengthening.

This project supports the third goal (creating a better-functioning health system) of the HIV/AIDS Partnership Framework. This project is also in line with many of the GHI principles, as it encourages country ownership, invests in country-led plans, builds sustainability through health systems strengthening, improves metrics, monitoring, and evaluation, and increases impact through strategic coordination and integration.

Mechanism Target Information

Since COP2014, PEPFAR no longer produces narratives for every mechanism it funds. However, PEPFAR has now included performance targets or indicator information for each mechanism based on the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting (MER) system. The MER guidance is available on PEPFAR's website https://www.pepfar.gov/reports/guidance/. Note that COP years 2014-2015 were under a previous version of the MER system and the indicators and definitions may have changed as of the new 2.0 guidance.

This mechanism has no published performance targets or indicators.
