Gondar University (GU) is a local GOE university partner located in Amhara. Urban HIV prevalence in Amhara region is 3.0%. GU’s large and historical teaching hospital provides health services to the Amhara region population, trains various health worker cadres, and serves as a technical support lead to regional health institutions and other health facilities providing HIV services. Through past cooperative agreements, GU has enhanced its administrative and technical capacity, allowing the university to support scale-up of ART services and strengthen ART training for health professionals. The goal of GU’s program is to provide pre-service and in-service training to improve HIV service delivery in the region.

The COP 2014 focus for GU will be to:

1) Strengthen medical pre-service and in-service training capacity to support the HIV/AIDS program in the region.

2) Collaborate with ARHB to provide technical support to Gondar University Hospital and affiliated facilities in the area of HIV care and treatment, and

3) Document best practices and analyze GU’s performance data regularly to guide program implementation and ensure cost-effectiveness.

These are core PEPFAR activities that directly contribute to saving lives and preventing new infections. This implementing mechanism strengthens, promotes, and enables long-term sustainability of Ethiopia’s academic institutions’ contributions as they relate to HIV/AIDS service delivery. It also supports the goals of the GOE's National Strategic Plan II (SPMII) and aligns with the goals of the GOE and USG HIV/AIDS Partnership Framework, and the Global Health Initiative.

Routine monitoring and follow up of the program will be conducted by the implementing mechanism’s staff and Technical Officers from CDC-Ethiopia.

The MER guidance is available on PEPFAR's website https://www.pepfar.gov/reports/guidance/. Note that COP years 2014-2015 were under a previous version of the MER system and the indicators and definitions may have changed as of the new 2.0 guidance.
