The Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI) is a sub-project of the Global Nursing Capacity Building Program (GNCBP) which aims to increase the production of skilled nursing graduates and the quality and relevance of nursing and midwifery education in select African countries.

The goal of the NEPI South Africa project is to strengthen the quality and capacity of selected nursing institutions in South Africa to ensure production of sufficient numbers of well-trained, clinically competent graduates. Strategies will include aligning nursing curricula with country health needs and priorities. It will also contribute to the region’s efforts to strengthening the nursing and midwifery workforce through its networks with NEPI programs in other countries. The project will work closely with the Department of Health (DoH) in identified provinces in the country as well as with nurse educational institutions (NEI) to build on the Campus to Clinic Mentorship Program (CTCM) developed by the ICAP Nurse Capacity Initiative (INCI).

The project will be implemented within the Nursing Strategic Plan as a collaborative effort with the Department of Health, South African Nursing Council, Nursing Associations and Nursing education fraternity to ensure ownership and capacity building of these governing bodies.

ICAP will continue to provide M&E technical assistance and capacity building to country teams to facilitate quarterly reporting and ensure high-quality data. In line with the GNCBP M&E Plan, progress to targets will be monitored on a quarterly basis and summarized in the quarterly reports. Project progress will be closely monitored and analyzed to ensure continued responsiveness and relevance to project goals, and modified as needed.

Mechanism Target Information

Since COP2014, PEPFAR no longer produces narratives for every mechanism it funds. However, PEPFAR has now included performance targets or indicator information for each mechanism based on the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting (MER) system. The MER guidance is available on PEPFAR's website https://www.pepfar.gov/reports/guidance/. Note that COP years 2014-2015 were under a previous version of the MER system and the indicators and definitions may have changed as of the new 2.0 guidance.
