ICAP is the prime implementing partner for NEPI programs in Malawi. The NEPI program is managed through the ICAP Nurse Capacity Initiative (INCI), which was formed in 2009. The NEPI program was launched in 2010 as part of INCI. NEPI is a five-year project initiated by the US and operating in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), PEPFAR in-country teams including the PEPFAR Coordination Office, USAID, World Health Organization (WHO), and in-country stakeholders including the Ministries of Health (MOH).

INCI began NEPI in Malawi in 2010 and has established working relationships with the MOH, public nursing education institutions, CDC, PEPFAR and other stakeholders (i.e., Malawi Nursing Council, World Health Organization, and Malawi nursing and midwifery associations, Christian Health Association of Malawi). NEPI’s in-country team has worked with these stakeholders on varied strategies to increase enrollment, improve nurse education, and develop faculty.

Mechanism Target Information

Since COP2014, PEPFAR no longer produces narratives for every mechanism it funds. However, PEPFAR has now included performance targets or indicator information for each mechanism based on the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting (MER) system. The MER guidance is available on PEPFAR's website https://www.pepfar.gov/reports/guidance/. Note that COP years 2014-2015 were under a previous version of the MER system and the indicators and definitions may have changed as of the new 2.0 guidance.
