Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) is a national mechanism implementing activities across all counties in Kenya. PATH will contribute to the prevention of HIV transmission through improved sharps and other healthcare waste management systems in line with the goals of the Kenya National AIDS Strategic Plan-III of eliminating HIV transmission in healthcare settings.

PATH will promote safe and environmentally friendly healthcare waste management (HCWM) practices and integration of injection safety and infection control practices into health programs. Health systems will be strengthened in line with the Global Health Initiative and PEPFAR Blueprint goal of smart investments -promoting sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness.

To improve cost efficiency, PATH will support pooled HCWM systems and waste segregation that ensure only infectious waste is treated while general waste is recycled or disposed with municipal waste. This will minimize operational cost associated with use of waste treatment equipment. Installation of non-burn HCWM technologies that are more cost-efficient will be strengthened.

PATH will train and build capacity of local health workers through a train-a-trainer (TOT) approach. Biomedical engineers will be trained on operation and maintenance of newer technologies.

PATH will support the MOH to generate, analyze and utilize HCWM data for better programming at all levels and ensure timely reporting to MOH and PEPFAR.

Mechanism Target Information

Since COP2014, PEPFAR no longer produces narratives for every mechanism it funds. However, PEPFAR has now included performance targets or indicator information for each mechanism based on the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting (MER) system. The MER guidance is available on PEPFAR's website https://www.pepfar.gov/reports/guidance/. Note that COP years 2014-2015 were under a previous version of the MER system and the indicators and definitions may have changed as of the new 2.0 guidance.
